Special Living Options Process

First-Year Students

A first-year student interested in living in a Special Living Option (SLO) can select a preference for the SLO by logging on to eLiving and updating housing preferences before the deadline date, after accepting the Offer of Admission and HFS Contract through MyPennState. Students can select their first preference for an SLO and then rank other preferences. Space available in SLOs is limited, and not all students who preference an SLO may be assigned. Some SLOs require an additional application to the college/department.

Current Students

Special Living Options have a designated housing space on campus for participating members of the SLO to reside. An SLO HFS Contract is offered for the following academic year to eligible students who are interested in residing in the designated SLO housing area and participating in SLO activities. Students who are interested in living in other housing options on campus should participate in the request process for those housing options. Refer to the Current Students section for information about those processes.

SLO HFS Contract offers are made to eligible students during the specified timeline. The HFS Contract offer will include a contract offer expiration date. An offer not accepted by this date will expire and will not be reissued. If a student does not accept the SLO HFS Contract and participates in the regular student process for another housing option, there is no guarantee that a HFS Contract offer will be made. Students who receive another HFS Contract offer after accepting the contract can add their name to the SLO Waitlist to be considered for a space should any vacancies exist.

Current members of the SLO must meet all eligibility requirements to be considered for a future SLO HFS Contract offer and must be active in the SLO during both fall and spring semesters. Each SLO will have a designated Housing Chair to track eligibility of members. The Housing Chair will also keep students informed of their status. Students who are participating in the SLO and programs will be made eligible to request an SLO HFS Contract the following academic year. If the student requests the SLO, the student will receive a SLO HFS Contract during the timeline, which must be accepted before the offer expiration date.

By accepting the SLO HFS Contract, students are implying their understanding that their room assignment will be made to a room in the SLO's reserved space, unless participation requirements for spring semester are not met. Students who do not participate in the SLO during the spring semester will be reassigned to supplemental housing in another housing area.

Roommate Preferences

If a student accepts an SLO HFS Contract and lists a roommate preference of a student who is not a part of the SLO, that roommate preference may not be honored. Room availability, the eligibility status of the roommate requested, and the type of HFS Contract accepted will be reviewed to determine if the roommate preference can be honored. If the student determines that the roommate preference is more important than residing in the SLO, the student should participate in a different housing option process.
